New audit and risk committee confirmed
30 September 2015Waipa District Council today confirmed the establishment of a new committee to keep a closer eye on risk.
The new audit and risk committee will focus on ensuring robust processes are followed to minimise risk to the organisation and its ratepayers.
The committee will be made up of:
- Councillor Clare St Pierre (Chair)
- Mayor Jim Mylchreest
- Councillor Judy Bannon
- Councillor John Bishop
- Councillor Andrew Brown
Bruce Robertson of Morrison Low has also been appointed to the committee as an Independent Advisor. This role involves him attending each meeting without being a member and without voting rights.
For newly appointed chair Councillor Clare St Pierre, the committee plays an incredibly important role.
Currently there is no formal risk management reporting structure to Council and instead, risk management largely sits at the staff management level. The new committee will provide formalised processes at a governance level so elected members have more active involvement in risk management decisions says Ms St Pierre.
Setting up the committee here at Waipa is following good practice and is strongly supported by Local Government New Zealand and the Office of the Auditor General.
The audit and risk committee will meet quarterly. While Independent Advisor Bruce Robertson will be paid for his role, councillors on the new committee will not receive any additional remuneration.
