New life for park bridge
8 December 2015
A classic stone pedestrian bridge at Memorial Park in Te Awamutu has been given a new lease of life.
The bridge goes over a small inlet in the large pond in the park and was built around 60 years ago. It was showing signs of age and needed replacing before it became a safety hazard.
Te Awamutu stonemason Colin Jacobs was commissioned to build a new bridge, keeping the design as close as possible to the original. The new bridge meets modern building standards, including the provision of a handrail. It is expected to have a useful life well in excess of 50 years.
As part of the project, some of the limestone rock wall around the inlet was also rebuilt. A purpose-built duck access area has been built into the wall, allowing ducklings easier access in and out of the pond.
As part of the project some of the existing path was replaced and the adjacent area was re-grassed. The total project cost was $70,000 and was budgeted as part of Waipa District Council's asset renewal work.
