Pool project progressing
10 November 2015
Work is continuing on Cambridge's new pool.
In June Waipa District Council agreed in principle to spend $7.8 million towards a new pool complex including the construction of an indoor eight or 10-lane 25-meter pool and learner's pool. The existing outdoor pool will be retained and plant will be upgraded along with the changing facilities.
Plans rely on the community raising at least $2.1 million. In September this year, Trust Waikato announced it would contribute $400,000 to the project; the biggest grant made in that funding round.
Council has indicated it would prefer a 10-lane facility as it would allow different and more activities to occur at the same time. Waipa mayor Jim Mylchreest said if funds didn't allow it, the council would aim for an 8-lane pool, requiring $1.1 million to be raised privately.
Concept plans are now being developed for the complex and will be available to the public next year. Based on the fund-raising being successful, construction is set to begin in late 2016 with the new complex opening in 2018.
