Roads closed for cycling
17 November 2015
Temporary road closures in Cambridge have been approved as excitement mounts over the latest world-class sporting event to hit the Waipa district.
At a Waipa District Council committee meeting today closures were approved for the Twilight Community Cycle Race in Cambridge - an event being held to ramp up interest in the UCI Track Cycling World Cup.
The road closures on December 3 will allow a series of community road races to go ahead involving toddlers and school teams through to elite cyclists. The closures between 5pm and 8.30pm will include Victoria Street from Queen Street (SH1) to Commerce Street, Commerce Street from Victoria Street to Duke Street, and Duke Street from Commerce Street to Victoria Street.
Proposed closures were advertised in early October and no objections were received.
Waipa Mayor Jim Mylchreest said it was great to see the wider community getting behind the UCI World Cup event.
I think the twilight racing in Cambridge is terrific because it's something everyone can get involved in. It's a great way to involve the whole community and really kick off a couple of exciting few days for the district.
The UCI World Cup event will be held at the Avantidrome from December 4 - 6. It is the first time this prestigious event has been held in New Zealand and has attracted 400 riders and 200 supporters from 40 countries. Hundreds of spectators are expected to attend.
The event involves the world's best track cyclists competing for points to determine their international ranking and ultimately their qualification for the World Championships and Olympic Games.
