Sports developments taking place in Leamington

Changes are afoot on the corner of Wordsworth and Carlyle Streets in Leamington as Waipa District Council moves to assist sports clubs in developing part of the land for rugby and cricket.

Property advisor Jane Blackmore said the land, which is part of the Cambridge Town Belt, is currently used for dog exercise purposes and forms part of the areas leased by the council to the Leamington Sports Rugby Club.

While the dog exercise area has been reduced, it was still able to be used and a fence will be erected clearly mark where dogs are permitted.

People will still be able to exercise their dogs on the upper terrace or use the Cambridge Polo Grounds in Lamb Street while the development is taking place, she said.

Spraying of the area in preparation for the development is set to take place in the next two weeks. Recontouring and seeding of the area will follow in March.

Although the Dog Control Bylaw allowed for Leamington Cemetery Reserve to be made available for dog walkers if or when the land was needed for sporting purposes, it was not believed to be necessary at this time.

Dog walkers will be able to exercise their dogs around the outside of the developed fields once the new grass is established, said Ms Blackmore.

However, they are asked to stay off the fields themselves and to be particularly vigilant about picking up droppings.

We are pleased to be working with the Leamington Rugby Club and the Cambridge Cricket Association to offer improved sporting facilities for the community, she said.
