Tests confirm water yield
14 January 2016
Test results have confirmed that a new bore in Frontier Road will provide enough water for nearly 1200 Waipa households.
Waipa District Council sunk the bore last year as part of efforts to secure more water for Te Awamutu and surrounding areas, particularly during dry summer months when available water from the Mangauika Stream is limited.
Just before Christmas, councillors approved spending around $1 million to turn the bore into a production bore, subject to final test results. Those results are now in and indicate the bore will yield around 1.2 million litres of water daily.
If the Waikato Regional Council approve, the new bore could be operational by the first week of March.
Waipa District Council is still looking for more water as the Frontier Road bore will only provide some of what's needed over dry summer months. Another test bore is currently being drilled at Taylor's Hill after test bores sunk at Te Tahi and Pirongia were discounted.
Meanwhile Waipa residents are being urged to continue conserving water as shortages start to bite. On January 8 Waipa, Waikato and Hamilton City Councils all moved to Water Alert Level 2. That means sprinklers and watering systems can only be used on alternate days (even street numbers on even days; odd street numbers on odd days) between 6am-8am and 6pm-8pm.
