Waipā events allocated $120,000 in funding
22 July 2019
The 2020 Waka Ama National Sprint Championships, Equidays, 2019 Christmas Regatta and Armistice in Cambridge are among 33 events to receive funding from Waipa District Council's two event funds.
More than $95,000 was allocated from this year's District Promotion Fund to support 23 events that promote the Waipā district as an attractive place to live, work, invest in or visit.
A further $24,000 was allocated from the Community Event Fund to support ten smaller scale grass-roots events which help build and celebrate community pride within the district.
Mayor Jim Mylchreest said Council has a strong focus on supporting and delivering events in the community and recognises the social and economic benefits they bring to the district.
These events give us the chance to showcase all Waipā has to offer to visitors to our district and the people who live here. We are proud to be the Home of Champions and delivering champion events is a huge part of that.
Kihikihi International Horse Trials funding coordinator Shannon Galloway said the $4,000 her organisation had been allocated was absolutely critical for the popular equestrian horse trial event to take place.
Each year the Kihikihi horse trials attract large numbers of national and international judges, competitors and crowds to Waipā. Kihikihi has been a great place for us to host this event, not only because of the venue, which accommodates the large number of competitors and their horses but also because of the support we receive from local businesses, landowners and Waipa District Council.
A total of $287,500 in funding was requested by 28 applicants to the District Promotion Fund, including nine new events to the district.
The 2020 Waka Ama National Sprint Championships to be held at Lake Karāpiro and the UCI Track Cycling World Cup 2019 to be held at the Avantidrome received the most funds; granted $12,000 and $10,000 respectively.
The Cambridge Autumn Festival $4,500, the Cambridge Brass Band $2,000 and the Waipa Fun Run $3,000 were among those who received support from the Community Event Fund. A total of 41 applications were received for both funds.
