Waipa's newest recreation space open soon
To celebrate the opening of stage one of Waipuke Park, Waipa District Council is inviting everyone to an opening party!
Waipuke Park Opening Party
You bring the picnic, we'll bring the ice-cream
Wednesday 16 December, 4-7pm
Live band, kayaks, games and activities, face-painting and ice-cream!
Mayor Jim Mylchreest said the opening party will be the first opportunity for the public to enjoy the lakefront recreation space and a great time to check-out the new swimming spot.
We want friends and families to come and see the beautiful new space available to the community and enjoy an afternoon out. All you need to bring is the picnic, and we'll provide the rest.
Local band, Cooper's Run, will provide the entertainment while guests join in the activities, take in the stunning views and relax with an ice-cream.
In the 10-Year Plan, Council agreed to spend $417,000 to start developing the park. The decision followed overwhelmingly positive public feedback with hundreds of suggestions received on how the park should be developed.
We received a great amount of community input and interest in the park, now we're excited to share the space and watch it being used by the community.
Work on the site has been underway for the last few months and has included earthworks to widen and re-contour the access way to the park, fencing, upgrading culverts and installing traffic signs.
This is just stage one of the parks development, after the opening we will see how the park is being used, then consider add-ons' such as a playground, a kayak launching area and maybe a dedicated dog exercise area.
Waipuke Park is on the shores of Lake Karapiro, past the Mighty River Domain. The park will be open for public use from 17 December. The gates will be locked overnight from 8pm-7am during summer.
Get your picnic hampers ready Waipa and see you at the party!
