Waipuke Park development one step closer
16 December 2014More than $300,000 has been tentatively tagged for work to begin next year on developing Waipuke Park into a public space.
However, the proposed expenditure is still open to community feedback and will not be locked in until June 2015.
The 40hectare site just up river of the Mighty River Domain is made up of 30 hectares on an upper terrace and 10 hectares on a lower terrace. The lower terrace is immediately adjacent to Lake Karapiro and includes a sizeable beach. The land was originally purchased by Waipa District Council in 2001.
In October, as part of its Let's Get Engaged' programme the council released a video of the site via social media and asked for suggestions on how it should be developed. More than 2,700 people viewed the video and more saw media coverage. Hundreds of suggestions and comments were received including hundreds collected from local libraries.
The feedback indicated strong support for developing a playground, barbeque and picnic area, ensuring there is a safe swimming area and for allocating part of the site as a dog exercise area. People also asked for trees to be planted and for basic camping facilities.
Mayor Jim Mylchreest said people were split on the issue of a boat ramp. Installing a boat ramp at the site is problematic because the water along the length of the beach is so shallow and the deep water is compromised by power lines
We're not discounting putting in a boat ramp in at some stage, but it's financially and logistically challenging. We've also had some feedback that some people would prefer that motorised boats not be encouraged at Waipuke, so that's something we'll have to work through with the wider community.
For the 20142015 year, money has been budgeted to upgrade the existing farm race to provide safe vehicular access as well as allow for fencing, gates and signage. Money has also been allowed for basic infrastructure including picnic tables and seating, barbeques and rubbish bins as well as some planting. Much of the site is currently leased and farmed. Lease income will cover the cost of site maintenance.
