Waste minimisation fund now open
Have you got a great idea for reducing waste in your community, workplace or business? Waipa District Council’s Waste Minimisation Fund is now open.
With more than $40,000 available, the Waste Minimisation fund is designed to support individuals or groups with their waste minimisation projects so that together, we can take responsibility for the waste we create and reduce the amount our communities send to landfill.
Council waste minimisation officer Sally Fraser said projects with a strong focus on rethinking, reducing and reusing waste would be given top priority.
“We are really keen to see businesses, groups and individuals take up the Waipā way of dealing with waste which is to first focus on reducing waste as much as possible before looking at how to reuse it.
“The very last options for our waste are recovering and recycling so projects that are based on these concepts won’t be given as high a priority.”
Previous successful applicants include beeswax wrap workshops aimed at reducing single-use plastics, and Waste Free Parenting workshops where new and expectant mums were introduced to different types of modern cloth nappies.
Two drop in sessions will be held in both Cambridge; 10am to 12pm at 23 Wilson Street on October 14, and Te Awamutu; 1pm to 3pm at the community space in the Te Awamutu library on October 15, for interested applicants seeking advice on their projects.
“I highly recommend people pop in to chat through their idea as I can steer them in their right direction for their projects. We really want to reduce waste in Waipā so the more successful applicants and successful projects we have the better,” Fraser said.
Applications can be downloaded here or collected from either of Council’s offices in Cambridge or Te Awamutu.
Applications close on Monday 18 November, 2019 at 5pm.
