No concern about Carter’s Flat
Council received no submissions on a recent proposal to rezone Cambridge’s Carter’s Flat to a commercial mixed zone, enabling more trading activities as well as apartments
Group manager district growth and regulatory Wayne Allan said it was rare to receive no submissions on a proposed Plan Change, given the rigorous legal requirements.
“This is a positive outcome and probably reflects the extensive pre-notification engagement that staff undertook with landowners in conjunction with the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce,” he said.
“It suggests we’re got the balance right and that there are no major concerns about the shared vision we have for the area.”
Zero submissions remove the need for a court hearing and associated costs estimated to be at least $10,000, and under the Resource Management Act the changes by Proposed Plan Change 19 now legally apply. Council is likely to approve making the proposed Carter’s Flat Plan Change, also known as Plan Change 19, at its first meeting on 13th December, with the operative date still be to be confirmed.
The Council sought feedback simultaneously for the Carters Flat Local Area Plan, and one piece of feedback was received in support of the development. The vision for Carter’s Flat is to become an attractive mixed-use destination with large-format commercial activities, including retail and office space supported by apartment living.
Meanwhile, submissions remain open on other proposed changes to Council’s District Plan, including:
- Enabling industrial development at Hautapu, north of Cambridge (Proposed Plan Change 17). Submissions close on 11 November 2022.
- Extending the Hamilton Airport Northern Precinct (Proposed Private Plan Change 20). Submissions close on October 28 2022 .
- A summary report of submissions for Housing Intensification (Plan Change 26) will be publicly notified on or about 28th November 2022 and available on Council’s website.
