Government funding secured
Waipā District Council has secured up to $5.24 million from the government’s Better Off fund.
The money has been allocated from a $2 billion fund to help councils pay for community improvement projects. Projects must help build resilience to climate change or natural hazards, enable housing development and growth or support community improvements.
The fund has been developed as part of Three Waters reform. Waipā continues to strongly oppose the reforms.
Funding will be used for Te Ara Wai Discovery Centre; a resource recovery centre; Lake Ngā Roto management plan; CCTV cameras; Te Awamutu/Ngā Roto/ Pirongia cycleway connection; and a feasibility study for a new Cambridge library.
A further round of Better Off funding, including $15.73 million already ring-fenced for Waipā projects, has yet to open. Council has yet to decide whether or not it will be involved in the second funding round.
