Construction kicks off for Cambridge’s new pathway
Work to extend the $10.2 million walking and cycling path in Cambridge will start tomorrow.
The pathway construction will be undertaken by Cambridge Excavators (Camex Civil) and include bi-directional cycle paths, footpaths, safer pedestrian crossings and intersections. It will connect to the existing Hamilton Road pathway and continue down Bryce Street to Duke Street, and along Wilson Street to the Victoria Bridge.
Once completed, the pathway will link existing paths, help children get to school safely and create a safer, greener neighbourhood.
Transportation manager Bryan Hudson said the project is going to be split into stages over the next nine months to minimise disruption to the community. The first stage of works will be on Hamilton Road and Bryce Street.
“People will see our contractors out and about from tomorrow onwards, but the first lot of traffic management will be in place on Hamilton Road and Bryce Street, from next Monday, October 16.”
This will include lane and shoulder closures, as well as the diversion of some footpaths.
“Bryce Street between Hamilton Road and Queen Street will be closed with resident access only during this first stage of works”, Hudson said.
Two-way traffic on Hamilton Road will remain at all times.
The project is being jointly funded between Waipā District Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency through its Climate Emergency Relief Fund’s Transport Choices programme. It is expected to be completed by May 2024.
