Waipā waste minimisation enthusiasts seeking support for local projects can apply for funding now.
Waipā District Council’s waste minimisation fund has $50,000 up for grabs to support projects that rethink, reduce and reuse waste. The fund is open to individuals, marae, organisations, educators, and community groups.
Thanks to funding from last year, Paterangi School were able to replace their compost facilities.
Waste minimisation advisor Shelley Wilson said the school is an excellent example of how a small idea can grow to support a community.
“The school was able to replace its compost facilities with an upgraded 3-bay system and purchase a robust chipper for mulching green waste with the funding they received.”
With the new system and chipper, the students are able to compost their food scraps, shredded paper, garden, and landscape waste onsite.
“This has made a huge impact on the amount of green waste produced by the school, and they are now working towards accepting food scraps from their local community,” Wilson said.
The funds are provided to councils by the Ministry for the Environment’s waste disposal levy.
Applications to the fund close 5pm, Friday, April 19, 2024. To view the funding criteria and apply visit wastelesswaipa.co.nz/wastefund
