Double-deckers a ‘gamechanger’ for Waipā bus services
News
Public transport in Waipā is getting supercharged, with the exciting arrival of double-decker electric buses to the fleet.
The state-of-the-art buses will boost the service and provide more seats, making them an even more sustainable option for local commuters on the 20 (Cambridge) and 24 (Kihikihi and Te Awamutu) services.
The new electric buses are being fitted with readers for the prepaid travel card Bee Card, and drivers are currently undergoing training to operate the new vehicles smoothly and efficiently.
Transport Manager Bryan Hudson said the electric double-deckers will help the council meet the increasing demand for public transport across the Waipā District. “It’s a game-changer for Waipā’s transport network. They’ll add a new dimension to our growing electric fleet.”
Waikato Regional Council’s Public Transport Operations Manager, Trudi Knight, says she is “very excited” to see the double-decker EVs transition into the Waipā fleet after years of planning.
“A huge amount of work has gone into developing these vehicles and EV bus charging depots for Waipā residents. We’re very proud to be making moves toward a more sustainable fleet, alongside our partners at Tranzit Group.”
Waipā’s commitment to sustainability and improving its transport options was boosted further with a new timetable introduced earlier this year. The impact has been remarkable, with bus patronage in Kihikihi soaring tenfold. In August 2023, the service saw just 80 passengers over the month, but by August 2024, that number had surged to more than 800.
Hudson said the double-decker electric buses are a big step forward in the district’s ongoing effort to make public transport more accessible, efficient, and eco-friendly.
“We’re thrilled to be part of the movement towards more sustainable transport in Waipā.”
“As more people switch to public transport, we’re ensuring we have the capacity and the infrastructure to meet the growing demand.”
Waipā residents are encouraged to hop on board and experience the benefits of the new buses as the district continues its journey towards a greener, more connected future.
