Community to benefit from resource recovery centre
The Cambridge community is set to benefit from a new, environmentally sustainable resource recovery centre, following approval of the subdivision of Matos Segedin Drive.
This initiative will transform land formerly used for wastewater treatment rapid infiltration beds into a hub for sustainability and community engagement. The new Cambridge Wastewater Treatment plant, which is due to be completed in 2026, has a much smaller footprint, using only around a third of the site.
Transport Manager Bryan Hudson highlighted the importance of involving local residents in the planning process to ensure the new facility meets the needs of the community.
“Before moving forward with the subdivision, we reached out to local community groups, including Lions and Urban Miners, to gather feedback on the proposal,” Hudson said.
“We want to ensure that the facility is designed with the community in mind, providing a place where people can actively contribute to sustainability efforts and benefit from the services offered.”
The new resource recovery centre will offer a convenient place for people to drop off recyclable materials, purchase repurposed items, and play an active role in minimising waste.
“The goal is to create a welcoming and functional facility that makes it easy for people to engage with and feel good about their contribution to the environment.”
Alongside the resource recovery centre, the site will also feature a new purpose-built animal shelter to replace the existing dog pound as well as a Park Operations depot. The Cambridge Transfer Station, operated by Environ NZ, will remain at its current location.
The infrastructure work, including the design of roads, water services, fibre, and power are expected to be completed by June 2025, with the construction of roads and infrastructure beginning in July/August 2025.
“We are now in discussion with potential funders and community groups who are interested in supporting this project,” Hudson said.
“This development is an exciting opportunity for the Cambridge community to come together and make a positive impact on the environment while improving local services.”
This project represents a step forward for Cambridge in creating a sustainable and community-friendly space, helping to enhance both the local environment and quality of life for residents.
