Cambridge bids farewell to century-old oak: a treemendous loss

Two significant tree removals are scheduled for Cambridge, including the removal of a 100-year-old oak tree from Victoria Square and pine trees from the riverbank below the Meadow Walkway.
The oak tree, one of the original plantings in Victoria Square, has developed two significant vertical cracks, and was assessed as a safety hazard to people using the park.
Waipā District Council arborist planner James Richardson said the decision to fell it was not made lightly, “Council and the community deeply value our precious and historic trees, and removals only happen when it’s absolutely necessary.”
Trimming to reduce weight and partially dismantle the tree means it does not currently pose a risk to users of the reserve. However, it is now in a state where complete removal and replacement is the best option.
Meanwhile, concerns from Marlowe Drive residents about hazardous pine trees on the edge of a steep riverbank below the Meadow Walkway have also led to action.
Following an assessment with Waikato Regional Council it was determined the trees posed a significant risk, both to the bank itself and to private properties.
If not removed, once fully grown the pine trees are likely to impact the Waikato River and the stability of the bank if they fall.
Due to the difficulties with access for heavy machinery, a helicopter was the most cost-effective and safest option to complete the removal. Waikato Regional Council is contributing half of the cost.
To ensure public safety, access to the reserve between Fletcher Place and Alpers Ridge will be closed for two days during the operation. A section of Lola Silcock Reserve, across the river, will also be closed as it will be used as the drop off location for the tree parts.
“In winter we will replant a new tree in Victoria Square and we are also working with Waikato Regional Council to replant the riverbank with suitable species, to ensure we maintain vegetation cover and protect the stability of the bank,” said Richardson.
The oak tree removal at Victoria Square is scheduled for Thursday, December 12 and the pine trees on Cook Street Reserve are set to be removed on December 16 and 17, weather permitting.
