With the Easter and Anzac long weekends fast approaching, drivers are being urged to prioritise safety with a simple reminder: take regular breaks (and maybe enjoy a Kit Kat while you’re at it).
Waipā District Council’s road safety coordinator, Megan Jolly, said driver fatigue is a major factor in many crashes — particularly on long weekends when traffic volumes spike.
"We know Kiwis love a roadie, especially over long weekends and school holidays. We just want to make sure everyone gets where they’re going — and back again — safely. If a Kit Kat helps people remember to take a break, then we’re all for it!"
Jolly and Waikato District Police Rural Support Officer, Constable Collette Corley were out and about in Cambridge and Te Awamutu this week, sharing tips on preventing driver fatigue and handing out a little chocolatey motivation.
Constable Corley said it’s all about staying sharp behind the wheel this Easter.
“If you are heading away, keep your speed down, watch your following distances and make sure you take regular breaks. And don’t underestimate the danger of that last stretch of your trip – fatigue often kicks in when you’re in the final 10 minutes of your journey. If you are tired, don’t be tempted to push on.”
With the stormy weather that is expected to roll in over Easter, it’s more important than ever to stay alert and drive to the conditions, she said.
“Check the forecast before you travel. If it’s looking rough, consider delaying your trip. Expect heavy traffic, and be prepared for slower conditions. Headlights on, and watch for flooding, slippery surfaces, and fallen debris.”
Top tips for a safer journey these holidays
- Take regular breaks every two hours
- Share the driving if possible
- Don’t begin a trip if you are already tired
- Drive to the conditions – not to the speed limit
- Delay your journey if the weather turns bad
Wherever you're headed— take your time, take a break, and stay safe out there.
