Te Awamutu War Memorial Park pond
High levels of the bacteria E.coli has been detected in the water of Te Awamutu’s War Memorial Park’s pond.
This is likely due to faecal contamination from ducks, rodents and possibly humans.
Please stay out of the pond when you are visiting the park. E.coli can make humans and animals sick.
- Avoid coming into contact with the water
- Do not drink from the pond
- Do not let your dog drink or come into contact with the water
We will continue to monitor the pond and have increased testing to fortnightly.
The pond water was also tested for blue/green algae, and this result was low.
Council staff manually clean the fountain in the pond every three weeks. As it was recently cleaned, we will keep it running for two weeks until the next scheduled cleaning. If E.coli levels are still high then, we will turn the fountain off so our staff do not need to enter the pond.
Warning signs will be installed around the pond.
